Head Lice Myths vs. Facts: What Katy Parents Should Actually Know

📅 June 11, 2026 ✍️ Lice Clinics of Texas ⏳ 5 min read

As the Katy area's local lice clinic, we hear the same handful of misconceptions over and over, usually from a stressed-out parent who just found out their child's classroom at a Katy ISD school has an active case going around. Before you panic or reach for the wrong solution, here are five of the most common head lice myths we hear in our clinic, and the truth behind each one.

Myth #1: Lice only happen to kids who aren't clean.
Truth: Head lice don't care about hygiene, income, or how often someone washes their hair. They're a human parasite that affects kids and adults across every background, equally. Lice are more common in children mainly because of how closely kids play and interact, not because of cleanliness. In fact, lice have shown no preference for clean versus dirty hair in scientific studies, and washing with soap and water alone won't get rid of them; they're capable of holding their breath for hours. With Katy ISD serving over 90,000 students across dozens of campuses, a lice case moving through one classroom has nothing to do with any one family and everything to do with how easily lice travel between kids in close contact.
Myth #2: My family pet could have given my child lice.
Truth: Pets are completely off the hook here. Head lice are a strictly human parasite; they cannot live on or be transmitted by dogs, cats, or any other animal. If your child has lice, the source was another person, not the family dog.
Myth #3: Head lice spread disease.
Truth: Head lice are not known to carry or transmit disease. They're uncomfortable and a genuine hassle to deal with, but they aren't a public health risk in the way many parents assume. The main concern is itching and irritation; in rare cases, scratching too much can lead to a minor skin infection, which is easily treated. Lice themselves don't make anyone sick.
Myth #4: Lice can jump or fly from one kid to another.
Truth: Lice can't jump and they can't fly. They move by crawling, using small claws on the end of each of their six legs that let them grip onto hair strands. That's how they travel from one person's head to another, or onto a hat, brush, or pillow; always through direct contact or shared items, never through the air.
Myth #5: Once someone in the house has lice, the couches and beds stay contaminated for weeks.
Truth: Lice and nits that fall off the scalp can't survive long without a human head to feed from. Without warmth and a blood meal, they die within about 24 hours. It's still smart to wash bedding, towels, and recently-worn clothing after an active case, but you don't need to treat your home like it's contaminated for weeks afterward. Twenty-four hours, and any stray lice or nits are no longer a threat.

What to actually do if your Katy family gets a lice notice

If you get the email from your child's school or just notice some scratching at home, the most useful first step is a same-day professional screening, not a trip to the drugstore aisle to guess at over-the-counter treatments. Our Katy / West Houston clinic at 20501 Katy Fwy, Suite 240 offers a heated air treatment that kills lice and dehydrates eggs in a single roughly 60-minute visit, with no pesticides and no repeat treatments needed at home.
